Hair extensions are fun and a great way to highlight with color, create style, add length and increase volume to your hair.
During the consultation:
Ø type of hair extension (weft vs. individuals) will be chosen
Ø hair texture and color will be custom blended to match your own hair
Ø method of attachment (braid vs microcylinder vs keratip, etc) will be
agreed upon.
Ø face shape, skin tone & lifestyle is used for recommending
hair cut and color
Hair extensions come in 2 major forms:
1) hair wefts 
or
2) individual hair extensions
Hair Wefts
Hair wefts are a cost effective way of adding length and volume to your hair.
A weft is a hair piece which is anywhere between 6 – 12 inches wide and radiates around the head. A weft is comprised of many individual strands of hair which are either hand or machine woven and sewn together.
People generally use 2-3 wefts depending on the result desired. For example, one weft would be attached from the area behind one ear across the head to the back of the other ear; the next weft attached from the area where the front of the ear begins across the head to the other front of the ear area.
Wefts can be ordered either hand tied or machine – made. Most of the work we do is with hand tied wefts since they are far superior in quality compared to machine wefts. With hand tied wefts the hair is better, custom blending of color is possible, and they last longer since hair does not shed as it does with machine made wefts. However because there is a significant cost difference we do sell both.
Wefts can be attached in many ways:
Braiding. Your hair is braided to create a thin track across your head. The weft is then attached to the braid with a specific hand sewing technique.
Pole Weaving. A similar concept to the braid wherein a thin track is created with thread and your hair, and the weft is attached with hand sewing.
Microcylinders are attached to the weft. Pieces of your hair are threaded through the microcylinder and secured to your head.
Glue is applied to some of your hair and the weft and pressed together in a flat manner.
Skin wefts are attached with tape and heat.
Benefits of wefts
Wefts are more cost and time effective than individual hair extensions.
Hair extension wefts can be reused for a long time: 2-3 years if cared for properly. Wefts also take less time to attach costing you less money. Skin wefts are usually used for printwork, filmwork and photo shoots.
Drawbacks of wefts
The major drawback of wefts is the person can feel their presence a bit more on the head; and since a 6 inch strip is attached across your head - you cannot run your fingers through your hair as you can with individuals.
They are also more limited in terms of styling.
For example if you had wefts and wanted to wear your hair in a pony tail, you would have to wear a low ponytail and could not wear a high pony tail. You cannot style your hair in any fashion with wefts whereas you can with individual hair extensions.
Also it is much more difficult to achieve many layers in a haircut with wefts.
Some layering is possible, but not a significant amount of layering.
Because of these styling limitations, most models and actors prefer individual hair extensions. This is not to say that a natural look cannot be achieved with wefts, it absolutely can. However you are more limited style – wise.
Individual hair extensions
Individual hair extensions are many strands of hair that are glued together and then attached to your hair.
There are several methods of attaching individual extensions:
Microcylinders. The individual hair extension and some of your hair is inserted through a cylinder and closed with a tool similar to pliars.
Keratip. The extension has a keratip bond (glue-like) which attaches to some of your hair and is heated, fusing the two together.
Microchet. The individual extension has a thread like top which attaches to your hair.
Individual hair extensions using microcylinders can be re-used and re-tipped at each attachment, whereas with keratip new hair is purchased at each attachment.
Microchet extensions can be moved up without purchasing new hair.
Individuals may be added just in back to give a little length or throughout the hair to give length and fullness. Some people use them purely for color as highlights.
Benefits of individual hair extensions
Because many individual strands of hair are attached to the clients' hair, strand by strand, they are felt less on the head by the person wearing them. Also one may run their fingers through their hair. In this sense, they may feel more comfortable and “natural” to the person.
Another major benefit is there is freedom in terms of styling: they can be worn in high ponytails, numerous up dos, and almost any kind of hairstyle. Also many layers can be put in the hair creating more choices for haircuts.
Individual hair extensions are a great way to add color to the hair without damaging your own hair. In other words highlights and lowlights can be created with individuals so the clients’ own hair does not have to be processed with color.
Drawbacks of individual hair extensions:
Time & money. Although there are exceptions, generally speaking individual hair extensions cost more money over time because the client will need to buy new hair more frequently.
We provide a special service of re-tipping individual hair extensions which utilize the microcylinders for attachment, so you do not have to buy new hair at each attachment which saves you money.
Also individual hair extensions usually cost more per attachment since they take more time to put in. Of course it all depends on how many you attaching to your hair.
Combing wefts & individuals
Wefts can be combined with individual extensions to produce very natural results often wefts are used for the back- underside and middle of the head; and individuals for the top and sides of the head.
Other considerations
The greater the discrepancy between your hair and the desired length, the more hair you have to add into your head, and the higher the cost. For example, if you want to keep your hair the same length and want more volume, 1 weft or fewer individual hair extensions would be needed. If however you want hair 4 inches longer than your own hair, most likely you would need 3 wefts, or many more individual hair extensions.
Ø Hair wefts attached by baiding and sewing: 7-8 weeks
Ø Hair wefts attached with microcylinder: 6 weeks
Ø Skin wefts attached with heated tape: 2 weeks
Ø Individual hair extensions attached with cylinder: 2-4 months
Ø Individual hair extensions attached with keratip: 3-6 months
Ø Individual hair extensions attached with microchet: 3-6 months
Regardless which technique you use, hair extensions should be reattached after 2 months to maintain the health of your hair.
